Summary on Grant Application Form
We have recently started a productive collaboration in the area of scientific document analysis and recognition, following on from Sexton's previous work on glyph analysis for font recognition and Sorge's work on the semantics of matrix representations in mathematical texts for use in theorem provers and symbolic and algebraic computation systems. Despite being fairly new in that field we already have papers accepted at two of the leading conferences in the research area. In order to firmly establish ourselves in that field we wish to make contacts and possibly start collaborations with the leading researchers in that area. The main aim of our proposal is to visit Professor Masakazu Suzuki, of Kyushu University in Japan, one of the leading researchers in the world on mathematical document analysis and mathematical optical character recognition. We wish to visit Professor Suzuki to explore the possibilities of combining our research in these areas and to start establishing ourselves and the University of Birmingham as a significant centre of international standing for scientific document analysis. Professor Suzuki has invited us to visit him in his lab to discuss our mutual interests and investigate the possibilities for collaboration. We want to combine our visit to Kyushu with the attendance of two conferences: The International Workshop on Graphics Recognition, 25-26 August in Hong Kong and The International Conference in Document Analysis and Recognition, 29 August - 1 September in Seoul. We have papers accepted at both conferences and attending both will assist us to make contacts and establish ourselves and our department in this field.
