We want to show people that science and engineering can be fun and can also serve a useful purpose. We will create a display that allows people to walk through a space so that other observers can follow the path they take. This path will be displayed on a plasma screen. The data capture system involves two infrared sensors and associated computer software that allows us to track a number of people as they move around. In real use the system can be used to find out how people avoid each other, how fast they walk, the size of gaps people leave when passing by another pedestrian. All these factors influence how much space people require to move in a space. If we can find out this basic information we can use this data to build better pedestrian facilities. In this project we will capture people's attention by getting them to spell their name on the display as they move in the observed space. We will then get people to undertake experiments with us involving walkers moving towards each other and deviating around obstructions.The display will be taken to Schools and shown in other public places where we can expose the ideas to a wider audience. One of the goals will be to see if we can influence people to take up science and engineering courses at University. We will question newly matriculated students to Napier University to see if they saw this display and how it influenced them.
