Summary on Grant Application Form
The Computing Science Department at Glasgow is planning a Research Festival for the summer of 2005. Each of the Department's main research groups is inviting a number of visitors to visit the Department during July, August and September.Rather than having formal talks and presentations describing research the participants have already done, the idea is to cluster around white boards and notebooks, actually doing new research together. By bringing together a critical mass of high-quality researchers from round the world, we will engender increased interaction and excitement. It will make possible research involving experts from different areas which would not otherwise be likely to happen.Exciting research areas involved in this Festival include:- Information Retrieval - how to improve systems like 'Google' to allow you to find information you need, and make this work for multimedia information such as music MP3 files or videos.- Bioinformatics - how to better push forward our understand of biology and medicine with the aid of computers and mathematics- Networking - how to improve the reliability of the Internet and telephone networks.- Mobile devices - how to make new mobile phones which are easy to use, possibly by for example gesturing with the phone, instead of using a keyboard.- Improving computer graphics to make film or computer game creation easier and more exciting.
