Summary on Grant Application Form
Current environmental legislation restricting the use of toxic metals in the manufacturing and automotive sectors is making the continued utilisation of metals such as lead, cadmium and hexavalent chromium increasingly problematic for other sectors, especially the aerospace industry, where attempts to find replacement technologies have not met with widespread success. This project brings together the surface engineering process expertise of Loughborough University Institute of Polymer Technology and Materials Engineering (IPTME) with the materials modelling and reliability know-how of the Department of Materials at Oxford University to address the replacement of toxic metals in aerospace applications. The proposal focuses on heavy metals Cd, Pb and hexavalent Cr (CrVI) that are particularly hazardous to human health and the environment. In the medium and long term the continued use of Pb, Cd and CrVI is unsustainable and basic understanding and development of aerospace-relevant replacement technologies must begin now. This proposal is supported by a number of aerospace companies who attest to the timeliness of the proposed work.
