Summary on Grant Application Form
E-Infrastructure is proposed for the UK that will support many people working together, sharing information, computers and communications. Their work must be protected from misuse and the infrastructure must be reliable as it will be used for engineering design, medical diagnosis as well as all forms of research. Much of the work is multi-national and almost all of it requires collaboration between institutions, such as universities, research laboratories and hospitals. Our government envisages a pervasive e-Infrastructure that will enhance the productivity of industry, accelerate research in many disciplines, support novel methods of education and underpin a well-governed and caring society. Such goals are very ambitious and can only be met by major advances in distributed computing technology and in the ways in which that is used. Progress also depends on developing concensus. Computers in different organisations can only work together if agreement has been reached on how this should be done. This project will encourage international collaboration, pooling ideas to accelerate the technological advances and debating alternative proposals to reach common understanding on which the required concensus and standards can be built.
