The proposal is to invite Professor H. M. Tutuncu from Sakarya University, Turkey for one year to engage in theoretical studies of two challenging projects related to vibrational modes (phonons) in semiconductors, their surfaces, and superconductors. Professor Tutuncu obtained his Ph D in 1998 under my supervision on theoretical studies of phonons on the (001) surface of elemental semiconductors Si and Ge, and on the clean cleaved (110) surface of compound III-V semiconductors by developing and employing an adiabatic bond charge model. Since his graduation, we have been working closely on a number of related projects, and have published a large number of high quality papers. Our theoretical predictions have helped experimentalists analyse data obtained from high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). In the past we have invited Tutuncu for short periods of two weeks to two months, supported by the EPSRC and CCP3. Professor Tutuncu's expertise has been enriched through a visit of one year at NRC, Ottawa. We strongly believe that if Professor Tutuncu could spend a year in my group, we would make substantial progress in the field of phonon physics. We aim to study phonon modes on compound semiconductor surfaces such as GaAs(001)-beta2(2x4), and electron-phonon interaction in Mg based superconductors and semiconductors.
