Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose the investigation of a new class of detector technology for imaging X-rays (1-140keV) - the Silicon Carbide array. Silicon carbide has many physical properties that make it unique for X-ray detectors. They can work in high temperatures (100 degrees C) and in harsh radiation environments where other, commonly used detectors, such as Si Charge Coupled Devices cannot. These devices have good spectral resolution (up to 140keV) at room temperature and above without the need for any cooling that will enable them to be used as detectors for medical applications, particle detection, envirnomental monitoring and well logging for the oil industry. They will find application in future planetary mission and landers.
