Summary on Grant Application Form
Undular bores are oscillatory, propagating transitions between two different steady states. They can be often observed in shallow water, and arise in many other physical systems. This project aims to use modern nonlinear wave theory to describe the formation and structure of undular bores in situations where friction needs to be taken into account. In detail, the project will use recent advances in the Whitham modulation theory to obtain an explicit detailed description of frictional undular bores in certain model nonlinear wave equations.
