Algebraic geometry is a key area of mathematical research. Since it came into existence through the work of Fermat, Descartes, Newton and others in the 17th century, it has had many applications inside and outside mathematics, due to its role in describing geometrical constructions in terms of algebraic equations. In the opposite direction the solutions of systems of algebraic equations can be described geometrically, thus providing an additional level of insight.Systems of equations which have more solutions than the general system of the same type are always of special interest. The coherent systems of this proposal are an example of this. The object of this proposal is to study these systems for curves with a technique which uses related curves known as spectral curves. Picard bundles are further related geometrical objects which can give added insight. The work will be carried out in the context of algebraic geometry, but also has links with differential geometry (which uses calculus rather than algebra) and with mathematical physics.
