Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal represents an opportunity for the PI to gain experience in computational non-Newtonian fluid mechanics and signifies a critical step in allowing the PI to build upon both his previous research, and that of the Fluids Engineering Research Group at Liverpool, in moving from purely experimental non-Newtonian fluid flow research to a combined numerical and experimental approach. To achieve this goal, the PI proposes to spend a total of 12 weeks working with Professors Alves and Pinho at the Transport Phenomena Research Centre (CEFT) at the Universities of Porto and Minho, Portugal (CEFT is a multi-institutional research centre) and with Professor Paulo Oliveira at the University of Beira Interior. The objective of the time spent in Portugal is for the applicant to develop numerical expertise in viscoelastic modelling and to become fully conversant with both the use of, and underlying coding of, an existing in-house viscoelastic numerical code. This represents a very important first-step in achieving the long-term goal of the PI of producing a code capable of modelling the turbulent flow of non-Newtonian fluids. This proposal is for travel and subsistence only.
