The proposal is for a discipline hopping award for the statistician Professor Ian Dryden to work with the computer scientist Dr Bai Li for a period of 12 months on topics related to automatic face recognition. Dr Bai Li heads the Face Recognition Group at Nottingham, and has developed a number of fast, robust algorithms for face recognition. Professor Dryden will bring his expertise in stochastic modelling and shape analysis to investigate further statistical methods. In particular, there are numerous sources of uncertainty in complex image recognition systems and it is important to understand and measure the amount of variability. This can be achieved using full Bayesian analysis, but such methods are computationally very slow. Hence, practical calibration methods will be used for assessing the uncertainty quickly. Also, the geometrical methods in shape analysis that Dryden has worked on will be of direct relevance to face recognition, and some of these methods, particularly for 3D shape analysis will be adapted for work on 2D to 3D face analysis. Dryden and Bai Li will also begin working on some applications in medical image analysis, notably fMRI.
