Summary on Grant Application Form
Update of data structures has played a basic role in computation, ever since Turing introduced his machines. The purpose of this fellowship is to provide a unified theory of update. However, even in specific cases update is a fundamental problem, and promising solutions are only beginning to appear. Our abstract theory will be instantiated in two key directions. One where the structured data is given by program-heap data structures and the other by XML databases. These instantiations will be investigated theoretically, and stressed by experimental language implementations. A novel spatial logic will be used to weave these strands together, and a general theory of data will be developed using either term rewriting or an algebraic approach. By the end of the project we plan to display the unifying force of our model by specification of systems comprised of components with different data structure formats, such as web servers which use, say, XML and relational database interfaces, while maintaining an internal heap.
