Structural ceramics are inorganic materials that are used primarily for their mechanical properties. Within the UK, many researchers are working on structural ceramics or on the processing-microstructure-structural property relationships in other ceramic materials such as bioceramics, functional ceramics, ceramic coatings and ceramic components for microelectromechanical systems. There is, however, little large scale UK industrial activity across the structural ceramics area, although there are many small companies manufacturing ceramics and hundreds of companies with a significant interest in using ceramics, either during the processing of their products or directly in the products themselves. Thus, the ceramics community within the UK is fragmented and lacks 'critical mass'. In order to build a stronger ceramics community, which integrates current and potential users, manufacturers and researchers from a broad spectrum of disciplines, the members of the community need to develop an understanding of each other's needs and strengths so that they can offer support to each other in working towards some broad, common objectives. Thus, this proposal concerns the formation of an EPSRC funded Structural CERamics Network (SCERN). The primary purpose of the network is to bring together the structural ceramics community, in the broadest sense, to increase cooperation and integration. This will enable the members collectively to develop a 'roadmap' for structural ceramics and identify the key areas in which the U K can excel.
