This proposal outlines three adventurous approaches for addressing a central issue in nanoscale science, namely nanowire fabrication and function. In all three cases, carefully integrated and elegant molecular strategies will seek to control the growth and architecture of the wires, and consequently their function. One strategy involves non-covalent assembly of metal entities by host-guest interactions to form architectures with predefined directional control of electron transport through the wire. Another strategy will employ an iterative assembly approach for forming discrete linear pi-conjugated organic wires of increasing and defined length on surfaces. Finally, gold nanowire fabrication is proposed by exploiting columnar self-assembly of discotic mesogens during gold nanoparticle formation. Additionally in this grant proposal, a competition is proposed for submission of high-risk proposals that will stimulate further adventurous projects in Birmingham.
