This research project is the last link in a chain which goes back initially to 1997 when the present phase of mathematically directed research into computerisation of symbolic modelling and solution techniques for engineering dynamics was started, and then further back to the late nineteen eighties when a bespoke computational environment was created for the early stages of conceptual design. The applicant has led both these strands of research and now wishes to bring them together in order to apply some of the thinking about information structuring and handling that emerged from the earlier design-centred research to the current activity in engineering dynamics analysis. The aim is to understand how to represent and visualise the algebraic structures and hierarchies that exist in an embedded manner within the mathematics of engineering dynamical systems that are amenable to approximate analysis, and also to understand the nature of such mutual interactions. The areas of commonality between the design research and the work on computational symbolic analysis for dynamics are in terms of problem domaining, information hierarchies and propagation, inductive and sequential development of information, forward and backward flows of information, and dynamic multi-windowing concepts for visualisation of different forms of information within the problem. These areas will be explored and new techniques will be developed which are specifically suited to the mathematical structures that convey information in the dynamics context.
