Summary on Grant Application Form
In the study of structural integrity of engineering components and structures. the precise knowledge of residual stresses inherited from various processing operations occupies a pivotal role: it is most often found that reliable prediction of component lifetime is impossible without incorporating residual stress information. The proposer has recently put forward a new general method of macroscopic residual stress reconstruction from measurements made on sections or coupons, that is suitable for all materials and processing operations, and can incorporate information obtained from several various techniques, e.g. diffraction of X-rays or neutron, but also measurements of strain, distortion, etc. The proposed travel programme will make it possible to establish new collaborations with the leading researchers in this field based in South Africa. Singapore and Australia, and to bring back to the UK new knowledge and skills in this field.
