The programme involves the design, synthesis and characterisation of novel synthetic molecular motors. The systems will be based on mechanically interlocked architectures (catenanes and rotaxanes) and assembled through hydrogen bonding and metal ion coordination. The same interactions can subsequently be used to control motion using various stimuli (light, heat, electrons, pH, polarity) under various mechanismsModel studies on molecules in solution will be used to determine which property effects are possible through this type of submolecular motion. This will be used to design systems that work on surfaces or in films so that the effects of molecular level motion are transmitted to the outside world. One type of 'smart material to be developed will be surface-switchable, stimuli-responsive materials.
