This adventurous proposal aims to carry out an innovative and ambitious inter-institutional research programme to explore a series of novel and timely themes within hyper-heuristic development and intelligent reasoning. Recent advances (supported by EPSRC) have demonstrated the potential for success in developing hyper-heuristics (heuristics to choose heuristics). This research theme is motivated by the goal of developing systems that are fundamentally more general than current technology can support. We will work closely with our team of internationally leading visiting researchers and with our industrial partner to explore and investigate the promising role of Genetic Programming within this emerging area of intelligent systems development. In particular we aim to investigate and develop systems that can evolve programs to meet the particular demands of a particular problem. A successful outcome to this challenging proposal could lead to a greater understanding of the issues that underpin adaptive learning decision support systems. We will investigate this area across a diverse range of applications from timetabling and scheduling to financial forecasting.
