Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to invite Prof Kevin Knight from IS]/University of Southern California to visit the University of Aberdeen for several weeks in August 2005.Professor Kevin Knight is a world leader in the development of computer systems that can generate readable natural language texts, translate texts between different natural languages and summarise sets of natural language documents. Such systems need to incorporate a lot of knowledge of the languages they deal with, and traditionally this knowledge is set up by hand by experts in computational linguistics. Unfortunately, this is very expensive, and also prone to errors and lack of coverage. Prof Knight has played a major role in the development of systems that can derive the requisite knowledge automatically, based on large amounts of raw text in the languages concerned. He will be giving advice to researchers in the Natural Language Generation group at the University of Aberdeen, who are using similar techniques.
