Summary on Grant Application Form
EPSRC initially funded the Fantastic Plastic lecture with the intention that it should be taken to schools in the local area. Within 6 months it was so well received that it was adopted by the Institute of Physics as its Schools and Colleges lecture for 2002/3. During this tour it was seen by over 8500 people, mainly key stage 4 pupils, but some as young as primary age and others being grandparents. At the end of the funding period it was then granted additional funds from the EPSRC Sponsorship Scheme to allow it to continue to be offered free to schools for the period 2003/4. During this period it was seen by over 2500 students in 15 venues. This application is made to enable this lecture to be offered to schools throughout the school year 2004/5 and 2005/6. Already 6 schools have tried to book the lecture for the 2004/5 academic year based upon both their previous experience or having heard of it for the first time through other means.Schools will be invited to book the lecture at any time within the school year to fit in with their delivery of the curriculum or as part of a specialist themed science day (as has been the case in several schools).
