Ionic liquids have caused a great deal of excitement among both academic and industrial chemists as potential solvents for synthesis and catalysis. In my own group, we have used them as solvents for inorganic, organometallic, organic, and transition metal catalysed transformations.Most studies of the use of ionic liquids in catalysis have involved taking a well-known reaction and trying it in a single ionic liquid to see if it works , often without reference to the same reaction in molecular solvents. While it has been necessary to know which reactions occur in ionic liquids, this form of study does little to explain how the ionic liquids can affect the reactions conducted in them. Particularly lacking are systematic, quantitative comparisons of the effects of the ionic liquids compared to other solvents, or indeed to different ionic liquids. With ionic liquids being described as 'designer solvents' it is imperative that these differences and how they may be manipulated is fully understood.This programme is to provide just such a systematic, quantitative study of reactivity at transition metal centres in ionic liquids. This will provide a predictive capapcity as to which reactions can benefit from the use of ionic liquids.
