Current synthetic approaches to discrete nanoscale magnetic complexes, which can function as single-molecule magnets rely heavily upon the random assembly of transition metals from a reaction mixture containing organic ligands. In order to supersede this methodology, I propose to use a step-bystep synthetic approach, starting from discrete metal complexes coated in coordinatively unsaturated ligands to provide points for controlled growth. The first strategy will be to employ known single-molecule magnets as the core around which highly anisotropic metal centres can be added, with the aim of increasing the spin ground state, magnetic anisotropy and hence the blocking temperature in a controlled manner. The second approach will be to use molecular templates with well-defined structures to assemble an outer shell of paramagnetic centres, providing access to new nanomagnets with unprecedented molecular structures.Potential applications of this research are in ultra high-density data storage and quantum computing.
