Summary on Grant Application Form
Advances in engineering, science and manufacturing require corresponding advances in NDE, which includes developments of measurement technology and associated instrumentation. The UK has an excellent record of being at the forefront of these technologies, but requires an increasing effort to maintain its position ahead of global competition. China is the largest developing economy of the world and represents a huge potential market for UK's science, industry and technology transfer. Chinese researchers have also made excellent progress in the area of NDE, measurement and instrumentation recently. The research work of the communities is complementary. There are numerous opportunities for UK universities and companies to collaborate with partners in China to develop new joint research in emerging areas such as NDE for micro system and nanotechnology. This proposal is motivated both by the recent visit of the Science Minister Lord Sainsbury to China to open the first UK-China Hi-Tech Forum and by the, current EPSRC initiative to set up specific network programmes in collaboration with partners in China. This proposal includes opportunities for UK scientists and engineers to visit China to develop contacts and establish a mutually beneficial collaboration. This visit will provide good opportunities for UK research group leaders and active researchers to be familiar with Chinese research and development in the areas of non-destructive evaluation, measurement and instrumentation by a series of seminars and laboratory tours. Through the visits and meetings, complementary research will be identified and further cooperative research will be prioritised. A report about the visit and outcome of the discussion will be published in the national conferences of both countries. A further collaborative network including a wide range of joint research programmes in non-destructive evaluation (NDE; measurements and instrumentation between UK and Chinese universities and research institutes may be established. The initial representative membership includes more than 6 UK universities and over 18 Chinese universities and research institutes.
