Optical sources can have an important impact in the biological sciences. In this proposal, Dr Lake will gain new experience in the Bute Medical School under the supervision of Dr Gunn-Moore on techniques on cell culturing and analysis in neuronal science. Using this as a basis she will investigate original new areas in the field that will build upon the idea that light may guide and activate neuron growth. This process will be studied in a systematic manner by varying the laser wavelength right from the blue end of the spectrum to the infra red: spefically we will use lasers at 400nm, 670nm, 780nm and 1064nm for arrange of experimental parameters and even use advanced light shapes and study in detail the molecular mechanisms of the process. This is a key study and likely to be of widespread interest.
