As deep sub-micron (DSM) effects become dominant in digital system design, it becomes necessary to consider power optimization, as power begins to dominate area as a figure of merit. This is due to both the pad-limited nature of many modern designs, and the rapid increase in logic density outstripping the rate of improvement in heat-sinking and packaging technology.It is proposed to extend a framework for word-length optimization of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) systems to the domain of power optimization. Specifically, it is aimed to allow the DSP designer to explore and optimize the power implications of an algorithm by automating the design of poweroptimized architectures for a given algorithm.It is proposed to conduct this work in three stages. Firstly parameterizable power models for arithmetic components implemented in reconfigurable fabrics will be constructed. Secondly algorithms utilizing these models will be constructed, allowing automatic synthesis of the algorithms. Thirdly, the models will be expanded to incorporate placement and fanout effects, which are likely to become increasingly important over the next few silicongenerations.
