Summary on Grant Application Form
High intensity focused ultrasound (FUS) has been developed at the Institute of Cancer Research, Sutton for the treatment of soft tissue tumours. The technique allows high power ultrasound to be focused into a target region (e.g. part of a tumour) using a source located outside the body. The heat generated at the focus can kill cancer cells within seconds. To date we have developed and clinically tested a prototype system. In Department of Health funded clinical trials we have shown that treatment is well tolerated by patients and can be effective for treating solitary liver and kidney tumours. The treatment of over 70 patients has given us the experience necessary to now improve our relatively simple first prototype system. We have recently been funded by EPSRC to develop a more sophisticated clinical device that will allow us to image tissue destruction during therapy. We propose to extend this funded study by investigating novel phased array ultrasound sources that would allow us to speed up FUS treatments by changing the shape and position of the heated volume electronically. Faster treatments will allow us to target larger tumours than previously.
