The development of efficient organocataysc systems is a major theme in academic asymmetric catalysis research today as an environmentally attractive alternative to transitio-metal catalysed processes. Our preliminary studies of a praline-mediated aminoxylation reaction yield exciting and potentially significant findings related both to practical exploitation of these systems. Additionally, study of these systems may lead to a better understanding of the evolution of biological homochirality. Our proposed research provides one of the first comprehensive approaches aimed at deepening our mechanistic understanding of such systems, in particular focusing on the autoinductive processes uncovered in preliminary work. Utilizing both quantitative and synthetic chemistry skills, we will develop a mechanistic understanding of this and related reactions towards the design of more efficient organocatalysts. Further, we seek to find truly autocatalytic reactions that could be candidates for the development of optically active molecules from prebiotic chemistry.
