Summary on Grant Application Form
Aim of the proposed research projectThe aim of this feasibility study is to develop a fully integrated, multi-functional fibre-metal laminate endowed with sensing functions. Fibre metal laminates (FMLs) are layered systems based on stacked arrangements of metal alloys (aluminium or titanium) and a fibre reinforced polymer matrix. FMLs have been shown to offer superior structural properties such as improved fatigue and impact resistance, over conventional aerospace materials. Through the innovative synthesis of novel polymer optical-fibre sensors and shape-memory alloys into a new generation of fibre-metal laminates, exciting breakthroughs can be achieved by adopting a synergistic approach in their integration. This will lead to a new breed of engineering structures with built-in self-diagnostics and morphing capability.
