Summary on Grant Application Form
There are many important reactions that are used to make a new carbon-carbon bond by coupling a reactive compound containing a carbon-metal bond with organic compounds containing a carbon-chlorine bond. These reactions are catalysed by palladium compounds. It would be desirable if the compounds containing the carbon-metal bond could be replaced with a compound containing a carbon-silicon bond, since these are cheaper, easier to make, more stable, and do not give by-products that damage the environment. However, at present, the catalysts are not reactive enough to make these reactions useful. Furthermore, they require an excess of fluoride salts to get them to work at all. Fluoride salts are corrosive and damage the environment if used at industrial scale. This project aims to develop better catalysts for these reactions by studying the step in the reaction that has been identified to be problematic. The project will also attempt to remove the requirement of using fluoride, or any additives, altogether.
