The ability to accurately determine the distance between two points is a timeless problem that has been solved using various techniques throughout history. Today, most of the more powerful approaches make use of lasers. Various laser sources have been used to obtain near instantaneous measurements over a wide range of distances. However, all these techniques suffer from a classic trade-off, as the range increases the accuracy decreases. So, for example, distances of the order of 50km can be measured within an accuracy of few millimetres, while target distance of a centimetre or so can be measured with a resolution of a few microns. In the majority of these schemes the distance to the target is determined by measuring some property of the reflected signal.In this project the reflected signal is used to generate frequency shifted optical feedback which is injected into a semiconductor laser. The properties of this novel system are such, that the link between range and resolution is broken, allowing in principle, extremely accurate measurements to be made over very large distances. The project will undertake 'proof-of-principle' experiments that will determine the practical capabilities of this technique.
