Summary on Grant Application Form
Keele University has developed a process for the non-destructive chemical analysis of 3-dimensional objects through extension of standard x-ray imaging techniques. This project will extend the range of imagable elements, improve the elemental resolution between neighbours in the periodic table, and develop automated data collection and image processing procedures applicable to the security and forensic sectors. Image processing techniques will be developed, based on known methods, to allow precise mapping of target elements within objects which contain a conjested background. A combination of sophisticated signal processing and neural networks will allow identification of target materials when they they are significatly occluded, even by materials containing elements with similar atomic number to the target elements. The work will be carried out in collaboration with the Forensic Science Service and an x-ray systems manufacturer to ensure optimised system design in the final instrumentation.
