Summary on Grant Application Form
In the same way that everyday machines such as car engines are built from smaller components, very small (molecular) building blocks assemble into much more complicated groupings that act as functional machines in our own bodies often with very similar structures. In many respects it is easiest to think of biological construction in a similar way to having a giant LEGO set - the possibilities are endless. This is of interest in a new scientific area known as Nanotechnology which amongst other things seeks to use small components in computer processing and for sensing of disease. Because molecules are extremely small if they can be forced to behave in a desired manner they are attractive building blocks of nanomachines. Therefore having the correct LEGO blocks is important. In this research, we will develop the building blocks of nanotechnology - that is to say we will make a LEGO set of small molecules that interact (talk) to each other in a manner that we desire. We will make (synthesize) molecules that selectively recognize each other in the presence of larger numbers of similar molecules.
