Summary on Grant Application Form
We plan to investigate algebraic objects known as groups. These are used in maths, science and engineering to measure symmetry as in lines of reflection, rotations and so on. Some very large (infinite!) and interesting groups arise in different contexts and we will study some of them using tools from a branch of mathematics known as Hilbert Space theory. This subject was developed in part to understand quantum mechanics and in part to study large families of functions all together. The study of groups and HIlbert Spaces is a vibrant part of mathematics today and we hope our results will be of use in both subjects.
