Summary on Grant Application Form |
Many experiments have demonstrated that Bose-condensed gases act as sources of coherent matter-waves with laser-like properties but only recently have nonclassical quantum states been observed, i.e. number-squeezed states produced by Josephson tunnelling and the Mott-insulator transition. In comparison to quantum optics with light, quantum atom optics offers the advantages of very efficient detection of individual particles and the states with well-defined numbers of atoms are less delicate. The highly number-squeezed states prepared in this way form the initial state required for quantum processing with neutral atoms. Our experiments will provide the data required to evaluate such schemes e.g. to calculate the fidelity under given experimental conditions. During this project we will develop a novel experimental technique for reading out the quantum state of individual atoms / this is a key feature for a quantum logic gate that will be important for our future work on quantum information processing.
