Summary on Grant Application Form
The project aims to increase the awareness and understanding of young people to the actions that they can take to improve environmental sustainability - one for the seven Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations. Young people will experience the science and engineering aspects of how we can move towards a low carbon future through demonstrations at events and camps, culminating in the Global Village international youth festival of 5,000 young people to be held in Kent in the summer of 2006.Young people, with the help of De Montfort University and the Centre for Alternative Technology, will design and build practical demonstrations of environmental sustainability. This will include solar water heaters and hot water storage; solar electricity and battery storage; wind turbines and battery storage; compost bins; solar showers; etc. They will aim to ensure environmental sustainability by minimising fossil fuel use; maximising renewable energy; minimising fossil fuel in travelling; sourcing food locally and by minimising waste and encouraging composting. They will then use this approach as the underlying theme at events taking pace in 2005 and at the Global Village International festival in 2006. In addition, leaflets, web sites, PowerPoint presentations and video material will be prepared by young people and used to describe the progress of the project. It will aim to encourage other people to participate over the two year period. There will be features about the Global Village Festival on the radio, television and in the press. Finally, young people will attempt to measure their impact of these activities in terms of reducing their ecological footprint and changing their attitudes and behaviour. They will experience a low carbon future whilst having fun!
