Metal nitrides often possess unique physical properties, such as great hardness, high melting points, chemical stability and novel electrical/magnetic properties, which make them highly attractive for a wide range of applications. Using ion implantation and plasma deposition under carefully controlled conditions we have produced an AuNx compound for the first time. This is currently under patent application. There is a need to investigate the electronic and mechanical properties of this compound in order to determine its viability as an alternative to electroplated gold, and to optimise production methods, particularly with regard to the level of trapped nitrogen appearing as bubbles within the film.These goals form the main objectives of the proposed research. In addition there is an important secondary objective which is to investigate the controlled formation of nanopatterns within an AuNx surface layer. Such nanopatterns are observed on Cu surfaces after N ion irradiation and, in the case of the AuNx system, may provide a useful template for self-assembled monolayers.
