Summary on Grant Application Form
Sustainability is a complicated concept involving economic, environmental and social issues. People do not have a shared understanding of its meaning, not least because they have different values: a housing developer may value little other than profit, whilst a tenant may be more concerned about the quality of life. Scale is important too; the issues for a single building, or a component such as a brick within it are very different from the issues which arise for whole cities. A scoping study to develop metrics, models and toolkits for sustainable urban development which is nearing completion has allowed us to develop a deep understanding of the complex interrelationships between issues, scale, and the people and systems involved. This project will produce an electronic map which will cater for the needs of different people, such as town planners, developers, designers and most importantly, the ordinary person in the street. It will use imaginative graphic imagery to simplify navigation, but at the same time, will provide the facility to drill down to increasing levels of detail so that sources of information can be identified. This nine month research project will involve identifying urban sustainability issues, stakeholders and systems; selecting an appropriate process and visualisation mapping tool; preparing appropriate text material to complement the graphics; and testing the results to ensure that the map serves the purpose for which it was designed.
