COSLAB 2004 is the main annual conference/workshop of the European Science Foundation COSLAB (COSmology in the LABoratory) which brings together cosmologists and condensed matter physicists in exploring the strikingly close analogies between the structure of coherent condensed matter systems and the structure of and the early transitions in the metric of the Universe as studies in cosmology. It is a fundamental principle of physics that there is a unified system of laws governing all scales from subatomic particles to the Cosmos. It is believed that the Universe, evolving from the initial hot Big Bang, would have undergone a series of symmetry-breaking phase transitions with observationally significant consequences such as the formation of topological defects. Direct experimental tests of these ideas are infeasible, but transitions described by very similar equations occur in experimentally accessible condensed-matter systems at low temperatures.The Ambleside meeting will host about 55 European participants and is supported by a 40,000 grant from the ESF. Both UK cosmologists and UK ultralow temperature physicists play a large part in this network and to have this year's meeting in Ambleside provides a great showcase for UK condensed matter physics. To complete the success of the meeting we need to be able to invite and encourage participants from outside the European area and it is in support of such people (for example from the US) that we are requesting some modest support from EPSRC.
