Dendrimers are ideal, uniform building blocks for the assembly of supramolecular structures for technological applications due to their unique combination of molecular and polymeric characteristics. They have well-defined structure akin to molecular materials, and their macromolecular size is ideal for processing. It is known that their size and functionality of their core and of their end groups controls the self-assembly route, final morphology and material properties of dendrimers in solution, but little is known of their behaviour at interfaces. We intend to address this by examining the in-plane morphology and surface shear rheological properties of a family of film forming dendrimers at the model hydrophobic-hydrophilic, air-water interface. Morphology characterisation will be facilitated by fabrication of a novel mini Langmuir trough for use inside the environmental scanning electron microscope chamber. This will allow, for the first time, nano scale resolution insitu imaging of film morphology and its development during compression/decompression cycles. Furthermore we will capitalise on the nanoscale order of the dendrimer films and lock this into place via light stimulated polymerisation, and elucidate the fundamental molecular structure-morphology-mechanical property relationships of the nano-ordered networks formed.
