Summary on Grant Application Form
Analysis is playing an increasingly important role in group theory and geometry. In this project it is intended to study the analytic property of exactness using geometric methods. Existing techniques for the study of free groupsdeveloped by Guentner and Kaminker will be generalised to show that groups acting properly on finite dimensional CAT(0) cube complexes have exact reduced C* algebras. The technique will involve the construction of large scale Lipschitz maps from the group to an appropriate Hilbert space. More speculatively it is intended to attempt to apply these ideas to study the outer automorphism group of a free group. The main technique here will be to study the action of the group on Outer space and to attempt to impose the additional structure of a measured wall space as recently defined by Valette and his collaborators. The initial step will involve studying the one case where such an action is known to exist, the outer automorphism group of the free group of rank 2. Here the group acts on a tree and we wiill study the induced wall structure in Outer space .
