Summary on Grant Application Form
This project proposes the investigation and development of a solid-sate, multi-sensor inductive scanner for the real-time imaging of reinforcing and prestressing steel within concrete structures. It will not only produce spatially and dimensionally accurate images of the steel components, it will also identify and quantify regions of corrosion. The system will comprise a flat, rectangular hand-held scanning unit (approximately 2 cm in thickness and 300 X 300 mm in area), a central signal processing and control unit, a power supply and a notebook computer. As the scanner is held or moved over the surface of the concrete, live video will be relayed to the computer screen with a refresh rate of between 10 and 20 Hz, showing the steel directly under the scanner. The scanner unit will consist of a large excitation coil surrounding a two dimensional array of semiconductor sensors, arranged in a regular grid formation. The control unit will include a variable frequency oscillator for the excitation coil, sensor preconditioning and multiplexing circuitry, a timing and control system and a high-speed DSP core for signal enhancement, pre-image interpolation, layer separation, dimensional estimation and final image rendering. The same control unit will also include a high-speed interface for the transmission of live video to the notebook computer. It may also be possible to consider live transmission of the video data to a remote station via a wireless internet link.
