Summary on Grant Application Form
We request core equipment to expand our capability in biomedical imaging through underpinning specialist workshop enhancements to be used in RF engineering for MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and for the development of magnetoencephalography (MEG) using optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs). These enhancements will particularly support human imaging using a new MRI scanner operating at ultra-high field (11.7T), which we are establishing as a National Facility for the UK. The equipment requested is a vector network analyser, high frequency oscilloscope, dielectric probe set, optical-fibre thermometry system and 3D printer.

We also request core equipment that will accelerate new work on metabolic and functional imaging that will ultimately particularly exploit the ultra-high field scanner's increased sensitivity and spectral resolution. This is an RF coil to enable the study of deuterium in the head at 7T, a visual and auditory presentation system and a system for local magnetic field (B0) shimming.

The core equipment will immediately benefit a diverse group of researchers and enable scientific developments which support wide-ranging future use of the UK National facility for ultra-high field human MRI scanning.
