Summary on Grant Application Form
Single layers of atoms, in regular arrays, can be used to shape light as it passes through or reflects from the layer. Since the arrays interact with single photons, the fundamental elementary particles which make up light, they can control quantum as well as classical properties. These properties can be exploited for applications including advanced quantum computing, communications, and information processing. A key ingredient necessary to realise such advances is entanglement, when the quantum state of one particle depends on that of another, even when the particles are separated. In this Fellowship I will explore how the state of individual photons of light can be entangled with the state of the atoms in the array, and how this can be used to detect single photons, store them in long-lived excited states, and re-emit them with unprecedented control over the resulting outgoing light beam. I will also explore how the interaction of atomic arrays with the surrounding environment can modify their properties, and lead to novel and interesting physics not found in systems which are isolated from their surroundings.
