Summary on Grant Application Form |
A novel and exciting new way of representing the way a fluid moves has recently been published by the proposer. This is governed by a set of equations called the Navier-Stokes equations, and the solution to the Navier-Stokes equations is very difficult to obtain and listed as one of the millennium problems, which are the mathematical challenges of our time. This new representation suggests a straightforward way to solve the Navier-Stokes equations, and in the published paper the Blasius problem was solved using this technique, which describes the flow in a layer adjacent to the boundary. This solution is a simple classical problem given first by Blasius, so the proposed research here is to provide a challenging benchmark for the new method which will be a litmus test for verifying mathematically the novel approach. The proposed benchmark is uniform flow past a finite flat plate which is has a much more complex structure that the Blasius problem, and so is a much more challenging problem to solve.
