Medical physics is the use of physics techniques for medical diagnosis and treatment and includes x-ray imaging, radiotherapy, lasers and other well-known methods. Medical physics students at university typically say that they enjoy the way that the subject is linked to real-life applications which benefit people. Recruitment into medical physics remains relatively healthy despite falling numbers studying physics in general, and approximately 50% of medical physicists are women.We believe that if medical physics can be introduced into the National Curriculum at GCSE level, more students may be encouraged to study physics at A-level and beyond. However, few teachers have experience of medical physics and may find the subject difficult to teach. Accordingly, we propose to provide teachers of GCSE science with Powerpoint presentations which can be used to teach two areas of the National Curriculum - the electromagnetic spectrum and radioactivity - with examples drawn from medical physics. We will also provide a workbook to accompany the two lessons, a short textbook which will give further information about medical physics, and posters to accompany the lessons.We will send a pack containing this material to the head of science in every secondary school in the UK. A website will act as a source of further information.
