This is a grant application for travel funds for researchers from the University of Strathclyde to visit the Joint European Torus (JET) experiment and the MAST experiment (both located at UKAEA Culham Laboratory, Abingdon, Oxfordshire), the TEXTOR experiment (located at Forschungszentrum, Juelich, German) and the ASDEX-U experiment (located at Garching, near Munich, Germany). These are all tokamak fusion experiments (with JET the flagship device in Europe and the largest in the world) which operate within a European collaboration for the development of controlled magnetic confinement fusion as a power source. The funding will support direct participation of the University in investigations proposed by the University and accepted for these experiments. It is an important opportunity for the University to participate in and contribute to collaborative studies with leading international researchers at world class sites. The proposed work will include experiments on neutral beams, behaviour of heavy species, impurity transport and development of key new atomic interpretative and analysis models designed for shared use in Europe. The work will assist in the design, planning and atomic physics background for the proposed international tokamak ITER.
