Summary on Grant Application Form |
By combining the technologies of using electrical discharges in gases to create a plasma with the established use of catalysts for destroying pollutants, we can develop a new technology for the environmental clean-up of waste gas streams. Both technologies have been applied separately to the problem of destroying a wide range of hazardous air pollutants but the synergistic effect of combining the two technologies offers unique advantages in terms of lower operating temperatures and selective production of end-products that neither method offers on its own. In this project, we will investigate how the chemistry and choice of catalysts and the nature of the electrical input to the discharge affects the efficiency of the processing. The aim is to develop a sustainable and energy efficient process that is viable and competitive with already established technologies without some of their inherent disadvantages.
