Summary on Grant Application Form |
In 2001 the EPSRC organised a Forward Look at Atomic and Molecular Physics Research in the UK. The steering group report made a number of recommendations some of which were be considered as part of the EPSRC planning process while others were identified as requiring a positive approach by the community to EPSRC before further action to take forward the opportunities and recommendations identified in the report. Two major recommendations in the latter category were described as necessary for strengthening the Community, in particular;(a) In order to reintegrate the community, and to promote alliances with other related communities, it should take this opportunity to approach the EPSRC, the Institute of Physics and other appropriate bodies with a view to gaining support to reinstate a national conference in AMO and related physics.(b) To organise a Summer School in AMO Physics for PhD students would be highly beneficial in addressing quality issues, and offer excellent use of advanced teaching resources. The community should consider approaching EPSRC for funding to establish such a school. The Division of Atomic Molecular Optical and Plasma Physics (DAMOPP) of the Institute of Physics responded on behalf this community and in September 7 / 12, 2003 organised the first QuAMP (Quantum Atomic, Molecular and Plasma Physics) conference at the Open University, Milton Keynes. We now propose to hold QuAMP I as a dedicated summer school September 19 to 23, 2005 for in excess of 50 PhD students (in years 1 and 2) to provide training in cross disciplnary fields. These lectures will be supplemented with focussed workshops on specialised skills and poster/short talk sessions to allow the students to develop communication and presenation skills.
