The proposed work is a feasibility study to design and fabricate a novel magnetically actuated micromirror array for the measurement of magnetic field distribution, based on the principle of micromirror rotation caused by disturbance of eddy current induced magnetic field. The magnetic mirror array is intended for next generation of 2D magnetic field sensing system with high sensitivity and high spatial resolution for non destructive evaluation (NDE) of engineering structures. Preliminary simulation performed by the proposers has revealed that micromirrors have higher measurement sensitivity and spatial resolution than current approaches such as coils, GMR, Hall devices and magneto-optical methods. An optical system will be exploited to measure the micro rotation of micromirror arrays. The new magnetic micromirror system will be expected to be applied for wide range of applications such as electromagnetic NDE and medical applications e.g. NMR, MRI.
