Summary on Grant Application Form
We are presenting an exciting new calculator at the Royal Society Summer Exhibition. It is a hands-on interactive exhibit that shows how calculators could work in the future, and also demonstrates cutting-edge computer science .Our research may well change the way basic arithmetic is taught in schools; it will certainly challenge calculator manufacturers to reform their approaches to handheld calculator design. Our prototypes of the calculator, despite being a boring simple application, have brought smiles and excitement to users, so we believe we have found some interesting research questions: why is it exciting; can we build on this excitement to make a durable product or interaction style that would stand up to daily use in, say, a school environment?
